Code for IBM i has changed a lot over the past two years. We’ve added more than a dozen enhancements and it’s easy to miss them. We’ll show off the brand new things you’ve missed for RPGLE, the database extension and more. Plus, we’ll throw in things the community has been working on to make Visual Studio Code better for IBM i.

* Learn about Visual Studio Code and Code for IBM i
* See different features in action, and learn about new functions
* Understand the strategic direction from IBM and the open-source community
* Learn how to contribute to the project

About the Presenter:

Liam primarily works with Node.js/TS and C, but has previously used other languages like C# and PHP. He is invested heavily into the IBM i industry to help people learn other tech (like Node.js, AWS, Azure, modern development practices, so on!). Liam loves working on and creating dev tools to make developing applications easier for everyone in the long run. He is now working at IBM as a Advisory Software Engineer, working with clients and open-source software. Liam of course loves, loves, loves open-source! Oh, and he sometimes speak at conferences.

From the President

Dear Members:

Happy New Year!

We are looking forward to an awesome 2025.  There is plenty to be thankful for as we ring in the new year.  With plenty of focus on the future IT is in an exciting era.  What a different world it is today.  Some changes over the years seemed to happen slowly over time and others seem like they have hit the community at warp speed.   If you think about how things were done even 10 years ago and compare today we so many productive tools at our finger tips.  One thing constant in IT is change.  Each year brings something new.  Let’s look forward to a wonderful and exciting New Year.

We will kick the 2025 SEMIUG year off with an extremely important topic “7 IBM I Security Tasks for 2025” presented by Justin Loeber and Steve Riedmueller of Kisco Systems.  Security is ever so important.  We all understand with broadened networks, extended communications, the internet and other concerns impacting our systems security is an area that should not be slighted or overlooked.  Join us on Tuesday January 21st.  You’ll be sure to walk away with useful information that you can apply within your organizations environment.  Kisco has been serving the IBM i community for many years and brings along with the experience expert knowledge and industry expertise.  Start the year off on a great note by joining in and learning how you can make your systems more secure.

In February we have a presentation on external storage planned.  Richie Palma of Service Express will be presenting.  Storage is very important to all organizations.  There are a lot of options to consider when discussing storage.  External storage should  be looked at as a potential option to meet your organizations needs.  Join us in February to learn and explore.

WE HAVE OUR DATE FOR MITEC 2025!   MONDAY JUNE 9th, 2025.

We will hold the event on the same week that we have had for going on 19 years.  Our event will be held this year on Monday June 9th.  The date is two weeks after Memorial day holiday.  We’re busily putting together the list of presenters and topics.  This year is very exciting.  We’re pleased to be holding the event again at the Schoolcraft College Vistatech Center conveniently located in Livonia Michigan.   The event will feature many sessions to choose from on current industry topics presented by world class industry experts, vendor expo, student meet and greet and more. If there are topics that you’d like to see included, now is the time to speak up.  Contact Laura at ubelhor@sbcglobal.net if you have suggestions on content and presenters.

It’s that time of year again.  If you haven’t paid your dues please do so.   We have the same low rate of $50 for an individual and $100 for an organization.   Membership allows for the group to continue support for our local IBM i community and continues to bring education and community interaction opportunities including MITEC and other special events.   We appreciate the community and support provided through the community.  If you haven’t done so already please pay your dues.  You can find details at the bottom of the membership page.

As 2024 ends and 2025  begins SEMIUG looks forward to an exciting year.   We will continue to strive to bring exciting world class presentations on valuable current topics.   We appreciate our local IBM i community and look forward to seeing everyone in 2025.
